Evaluation
Evaluating production decisions at National 5
How to move beyond basic description and write clearer evaluation of technical and creative choices at National 5.
At National 5, evaluation should move past simply listing what you did. A stronger response explains whether a decision improved the final production and why.
Useful points to evaluate include sound choice, timing accuracy, editing quality, balance, use of effects, and whether the production suited the brief or context.
For example, instead of writing that you used EQ, explain that EQ helped reduce muddiness and made the main material clearer. Instead of saying you added reverb, explain whether it created suitable space or made the mix less clear.
You should also be honest about limitations. If a recording was noisy, timing was inconsistent, or the arrangement became repetitive, say so and explain what would improve the result next time.
The best evaluations sound like informed judgement rather than a diary of actions.
Key tips
- Judge the effect of each choice, not just the action.
- Use technical vocabulary accurately.
- Be honest about limitations and improvements.
