Basic recording, editing, and mixing for National 4
Practical advice for meeting the National 4 requirement to apply basic recording, editing, and mixing skills in a short production.
National 4 coursework is not about advanced complexity. It is about showing that you can apply basic recording, editing, and mixing skills in a controlled and suitable way.
In recording, focus first on clean input. Avoid clipping, reduce obvious background noise where possible, and record at a safe level. A simple clean recording is better than a badly captured one with lots of later processing.
In editing, tidy the material. Trim starts and ends, remove obvious mistakes, and use fades where needed so clips begin and end cleanly.
In mixing, aim for balance rather than flashiness. Make sure the main material can be heard clearly, that nothing is distractingly too loud, and that the finished production makes sense as a whole.
At this level, a good final result often comes from a few correct decisions repeated consistently. Clean recordings, sensible edits, and a balanced final mix are usually more valuable than trying to use advanced effects without control.
Key tips
- Record cleanly before trying to fix problems later.
- Use fades to clean up edits.
- Mix for clarity and balance first.
