Building a 10-part production with purpose
How to meet the Higher minimum part requirement without filling the session with unnecessary or weak material.
Higher requires a minimum of 10 parts, but the goal is not to add parts just to hit a number. Each part should contribute something useful to the production.
Start by identifying the core roles in the mix. These might include lead material, low-end support, rhythm foundation, harmonic support, counter lines, texture, and transitions.
Once those roles are clear, build parts that serve them. This approach usually leads to a fuller and more musical arrangement than simply stacking duplicate tracks.
It is also worth checking whether parts remain meaningful across the duration of the piece. A part that only exists briefly can still count, but it should still feel intentional.
The best Higher productions meet the technical requirement while still sounding focused. More tracks do not automatically mean a better project.
Key tips
- Give each part a clear role.
- Avoid duplicate filler tracks.
- Think musically, not just numerically.
